CHS 490C - Acequias: Water, Land and Comn
Prerequisites: CHS 1000 or Permission of Instructor This class will study the use and history of an irrigation practice known as Acequias. Acequias provides a window through which we can view issues such as water scarcity in the West, pollution of water, sustainable farming practices. The San Luis Valley is the backdrop for important religious, agricultural and linguistic traditions whose mestizaje exemplify the messiness of colonialism. The course will take place partially in an on-campus classroom combined with three field trips to the community of San Luis over three weekends. Students will take part in service projects chosen from options based on the needs of the Sangre de Cristo Accquia Association.
